A Short History

The East of Scotland City Cup was originally the Edinburgh 2nd XI Cup which had lapsed in the 1890s. In 1904, Heart of Midlothian decided to put the trophy back up for competition, initially for the winners of a two-legged tie between themselves and Hibernian. Thereafter it was to be played off as a competition between several other clubs in Edinburgh's city limits.

Heart of Midlothian were winners of the first competition, and for the next four seasons, although neither Hearts nor Hibs have competed since those early days. Entry today is confined to the finalist (or winners only in some seasons) of the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup and Scottish League members of the East of Scotland Football Association.

The demise of Leith Athletic in the early 1950s left Berwick Rangers as the only Scottish League member and as such qualified for the final automatically and played the winners of the ESFA Qualifying Cup. With the admission of Meadowbank Thistle to the SFL in the mid-1970s the format changed with both finalists of the Qualifying Cup playing either Berwick Rangers or Meadowbank Thistle (now Livingston) in semi-final ties.

Livingston, who on several occasions decided not the field a side, resigned from the ESFA and the format returned to winners only qualifying. League reconstruction and the introduction of the pyramid system has opened the door to more clubs qualifying automatically with Edinburgh City, Bonnyrigg Rose and The Spartans now the Scottish League members.

With the competition usually held towards the end of the season, on several occasions, some matches were held over due to fixture congestion or, with a vital game in the offing, not played at all. With Berwick Rangers' managers having different views on the competition, the club has at times fielded their youth team, a mix of fringe players or virtually a full-strength first team. However, looking back at Berwick Rangers' overall record they have dominated the competition, wining 29 times, since it was introduced in 1904.
